Predictions 2007

We have made predictions on nine mobile data applications and one mobile data application portfolio on how each one of them will fare during 2007. We will follow up on our predictions on a monthly basis to assess their validity.

  • Mobile TV

    • Mobile TV on a 3G mobile phone – struggle for want of active audience. Chances of success in 2007 are bleak.
    • Mobile TV on a dedicated 3G handheld – Struggle for want of some traction. Future – some what hopeful in niche applications and markets. In 2007, the operators will struggle for traction and may stumble on a niche or two. The mass market future for 2007 is bleak.

  • Mobile Music Tracks

    • Mobile Music Tracks on 3G/2.5G mobile phones – struggle for want of active audience. Chances of success in 2007 are fair.

    • Mobile Music Tracks on dedicated handhelds – Will find traction if the access fee significantly comes down. Future – Very good. In 2007, a dedicated mobile device is unlikely to come to the market. Zune and Music Gremlin will build up traction in 2007

  • Mobile Ring Tones

    • Ring Tones – Will keep up their growth as VAS to voice calls. Future – Very good. Will experience a steady growth in 2007

  • Mobile Ring Back Tones

    • Ring Back Tones – Will keep up their as VAS to voice calls. Future – Very good. Will experience a steady growth in 2007

  • Mobile Mail

    • Mobile Mail on 3G/2G mobile phones – struggle for want of greater use. Future – will survive. It’s current status will not very much change.

    • Mobile Mail on dedicated handhelds - Can be disruptive if offered to the younger crowd. Operators will, however, be careful to promote – avoid competition with their existing cash cow - SMS. Good opportunity for MVNOs.if offered through dedicated handhelds. Future – very good. Some new offerings will hit the market and experience a good growth in 2007. The existing offerings will keep experiencing good growth in 2007.

  • Mobile IM

    • Mobile IM – Again a good opportunity for MVNOs to pitch it at the younger crowd.

    • Will find a lot of traction if offered as the principal application on a handheld. Future – good. Will experience good growth in 2007.

  • MMS

    • MMS – P2P – struggle for the want of active users on mobile phones. New initiatives may experience a fair growth in 2007 but will eventually taper off.

    • MMS - B2C - advertising holds good potential. Future – much depends upon adoption by the businesses to use this as the mechanism for advertising in 2007

  • Mobile Advertising

    • Mobile Advertising – Good potential. Likely to see some initial successes in 2007.

    • Future – Very good.

  • Mobile Gaming

    • Mobile Gaming on mobile phones – Kids and young teenagers are the major users of gaming as secondary application on voice handsets. Mobile gaming as a secondary application in these segments will experience a steady growth in 2007

    • Mobile Gaming on dedicated handhelds - Holds good potential among kids, teenagers and young adults. Future – Very good. Do not expect someone to venture out to offer this in 2007.

  • i-mode

    • The disappointment among i-mode operators will grow for the lack of uptake. Two mobile operators currently offering i-mode, will move away from it in 2007
