WiMAX- A Panacea for Indian Last Mile and Mobile Broadband Challenges

An Interview with Protip Ghose, Vice President Sales & Marketing, Telsima

The cell coverage area/data speeds targeted by our equipment.

Typically the WiMAX Forum has recommended a distance versus modulation chart. We have, in test environments, seen that we reach those limits. In real life multi base station environment, the actual overall efficiency figures might be lower. However, the most important point to note is that our current design and software features support both coverage and capacity models. Either a few base stations can cover large areas or we can provide a capacity model where the coverage is cellular-like with a dense packing of base stations. Data speeds are governed by the available spectrum and other radio conditions. We have seen the usable date rates reaching over 3.3 bits/ Hz in field testing in India.

The time when volume will support mass pricing of WiMAX chipsets/chips.

For 802.16-d chipsets, volumes will happen from early Q2 2007, whereas for the 802.16-e chipsets, volumes will begun to be seen from mid/late 2008 at the earliest.

Telsima’s selling point.

Telsima treats India as its home market. Our product roadmaps, features as well as price points are targeted to meet the business needs of the Indian operators. There are a number of features that we support and which create significant value for our customers. We have a very strong ‘d’ to ‘e’ migration and coexistence story, which allows operators to start today and protect their investments for a long time even when ‘e’ technology comes in. There are a variety of software features for load alignment, load balancing etc. which allow operators to start with low investments and grow as the subscribers grow. Our presence in India is probably the strongest amongst other vendors in terms of support.

Our achievements in the Indian and the global market.

Telsima is one of the elite corp of Certified WiMAX equipment providers - our base and subscriber station have received WiMAX Forum certification at Cetecom Labs in Spain. In October 2006, Telsima was granted “Best of WiMAX World 2006” Runner-up Award for its StarMAX 6400 base station in the Systems Design category at Boston.
